Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China.

For most people, the immediate risk of becoming seriously ill from the virus that causes COVID-19 is thought to be low.

Older adults and people of any age who have serious underlying medical conditions may be at higher risk for more serious complications from COVID-19.

Someone who has completed quarantine or has been released from isolation does not pose a risk of infection to other people.

There are simple things you can do to help keep yourself and others healthy.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing; going to the bathroom; and before eating or preparing food.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
You can help stop COVID-19 by knowing the signs and symptoms:
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

Seek medical advice if you:

  • Develop symptoms
    And
  • Have been in close contact with a person known to have COVID-19 or if you live in or have recently been in an area with ongoing spread of COVID-19.

Symptoms of Covid-19

Reported illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness and death for confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases.

These symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure (based on the incubation period of MERS-CoV viruses). 

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
When to Seek Medical Attention:

If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately. Emergency warning signs include*: 

  • Trouble breathing
  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
  • New confusion or inability to arouse
  • Bluish lips or face

Old adults and people who have severe underlying medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk of developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness.

Wash your hands often with soap and warm water (at least 20 seconds), or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

Clean things that are frequently touched (like doorknobs and countertops) with household cleaning spray or wipes.

Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze. Use a tissue or your inner elbow, not your hands.

Stay home if you are sick and avoid close contact with others.
